How Can I Get to The Top of Search Pages (10 Easy Steps)

How Can I Get to The Top of Search Pages

Google has a number of variables it uses to determine where a website or web page is shown within search results. Three of the most important variables are:

  • Helpful Content
  • Website Credibility
  • Website Usability

How Can I Get to The Top of Search Pages (Helpful Content)

In August 2022 Google rolled out its Helpful Content update. The update to the Google algorithm rewards websites and web pages that provide original and helpful content based on the user’s search intent.

Search intent refers to the psychology of what the person is searching for and supplemental information they may also find valuable.

While the Helpful Content update rewards websites and web pages with quality “helpful” content it penalizes web pages and websites with low quality content, plagiarized content, or content very similar to existing content.

How Can I Get to The Top of Search Pages (Website Credibility)

There are a number of ways Google assesses the credibility of a website and its pages. Three of the variables it uses to determine the credibility of a website or web page are:

  • Bounce rate, if a person searching for a specific keyword clicks a search result and stays on the page for a long time their behavior signals to Google that the result is credible and matches search intent, if multiple people click through to a webpage and leave the page quickly (i.e. “bounce”) than the page loses credibility
  • Repeat visits, if multiple people searching for a specific keyword click a search result, visit the page, engage with the content, leave, and return to the web page again than Google will increase the credibility of the page and push the page to the top of search results because the page’s content is so helpful to users that they make repeat visits
  • Backlinks from other credible websites, when a website or web page has strong backlinks from credible websites than Google may increase the web page’s rankings, this is because the backlink is link an endorsement saying “This content is valuable enough that I am going to reference, and introduce it, to my audience”

How Can I Get to The Top of Search Pages (Website Usability)

A ranking factor that Google uses to determine where a website or web page is placed in search results is how usable a website is across devices (e.g. desktop, tablet, and mobile). Some of the variables Google looks at to determine if a website is usable or not, include, but are not limited to:

  • Page load time
  • Broken links
  • Broken images
  • The number of 404 pages rendered
  • The number of 301 redirects
  • A standalone “FAQ” page
  • A standalone “Contact” page

SEO Checklist (10 Easy Steps)

Now that you have an idea of how to get to the top of search pages let’s move on to the practical steps you can take. Below are fundamental must-do SEO tactics that will help you get to the top of search pages.

SEO Checklist (To Get to the Top of Search Pages):

  1. Understand SEO: Before you dive into executing SEO strategies it’s important to have a basic understanding of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and the process of optimizing a website and its content so that it ranks as high as possible in search engine results pages (SERPs).
  2. Target the Right Keywords: Keyword research is a crucial part of SEO. When you perform keyword research you want to make sure the keywords you target sit within your customer journey. This means you intentionally identify keywords and phrases that your target audience uses to search for your products or services.

When you identify keywords within your customer journey you know that your site visitors are interested in something you have to offer (this ensures you are not wasting time and money optimizing for traffic that will not convert).

  3. Optimize Content: Optimizing your website’s content involves two types of optimization: technical content optimization and helpful content optimization.

Technical content optimization refers to ensuring page titles, headings (e.g. H1, H2, H3, H4), and schemas are optimized with relevant keywords, tags, and code to help improve your rank in search results.

Helpful content optimization refers to creating high-value unique content that matches the user’s search intent, incorporates target keywords and phrases into your website’s titles, headings, descriptions, and body text, provides value on the keyword or phrase searched, and answers questions that your target audience may have related to the keyword they searched.

To get to the top of search pages it’s important that old site content match the quality of newly published site content. If you have a website or blog with a lot of old content that didn’t rank well it is likely because Google analyzed the content and viewed its quality as poor. To help Google see your website as credible it may be in your best interest to unpublish old content, optimize the content using what you’ve learned in this article, and republish the content.

The idea of unpublishing and optimizing a lot of content might sound daunting but at the end of the day it can have a profound effect on how Google views your website’s credibility and the helpfulness of your website’s content — resulting in increased SERP rankings.

Additionally, to get to the top of search pages create a schedule to update existing pages and content with new information. This helps signal to Google that your website is active and continues to build upon the value it provides to visitors.

  4. Include Meta Descriptions: Meta descriptions provide a brief summary of your webpage and appear under the page title in search results. Use target keywords in your meta descriptions and provide a clear helpful description of your content to entice users to click on your search result/link.
  5. Optimize Images: One of the most overlooked tactics to get to the top of search pages is the SEO optimization of images. To help boost your SERP ranking create unique images and make sure all images on your website have descriptive file names and alt tags to help them rank in image searches.
  6. Make Sure Web Pages are Indexed: When a web page is indexed it means that Google’s bots found the page and “crawled” it to extract information to understand what the page is about and who would be interested in seeing the page. Google is always crawling the web. Rather than wait for Google’s bots to visit your website (which can take months) you can use Google’s Search Console to submit a new page to be crawled.

When you submit a web page to Google via Google Search Console you’re putting yourself in line to have a specific page indexed. Google actually likes this because it wants to ensure it has the most current, up-to-date, and helpful information. Submitting your web page to Google Search Console is a win-win Google gets new information and your web page is more likely to get to the top of search pages (if it is also helpful, credible, and easy to use).

  7. Improve Website Speed: A slow-loading website can negatively impact your SEO and user experience. Make sure your website is optimized for quick loading times. To improve your website speed use Google’s Page Speed Insight tool. It gives you a clear understanding of how fast your website is on desktop and mobile. If elements of your website are slow it tells you what to fix.
  8. Enhance Usability and User Experience: Search engines also consider the usability and user experience of a website when ranking it. Make sure your website is easy to navigate, loads quickly, and has engaging and relevant content for visitors.
  9. Enhance Website Credibility: Search engines also factor in the credibility of a website when ranking it. Make sure your website has high-quality content, is regularly updated, has a low bounce rate, facilitates repeat visits from visitors, and includes backlinks from other credible websites.
  10. Generate Backlinks: Backlinks are links from other websites that direct visitors to your website. Backlinks play a significant role in SEO as they signal to Google and other search engines that your site is a reliable source of information. Therefore, try to obtain backlinks from reputable websites in your industry.

You can generate backlinks by pitching media stories about your company and its services. A great, and free, tool to generate high-value backlinks from journalists is Help a Reporter Out (HARO). You can also generate backlinks by guest posting on credible websites and including a link to a specific page of your website or by being a guest on a podcast and asking that a link to your website be included in the podcast episode description.
